Samsung Galaxy Fold and S10: a word about the phones of the Galaxy Unpacked 2019 event

Yesterday, Samsung was holding the Galaxy Unpacked event, a big show to present the last products of the brand. Two majors new devices have been introduced: the long-awaited Galaxy Fold, and the new version of the S family, the S10. Let’s have a quick look at them!

Fold or unfold, phone or tablet

That was certainly the announcement everybody was curious about. Samsung revealed the upcoming Galaxy Fold, the first member of a whole new family. Not a too big surprise, as some leaks months ago have given the game away. But it was quite impressive to finally see it officially in action. This new phone, with a starting price of $1980 (ouch !), comes with a small 4.6″ front screen when folded, and a wide 7.3″ display when opened like a tablet. It will be released on April 26.

A lot of work has been made from Google on Android to allow smooth transitions from a screen to another. Android 9.0 seems really capable to handle foldable screen, and that’s promising for the coming years.

The (partial) specs of the Galaxy Fold are also quite impressive and at the top of the current technology :

Display 4.6-inch Super AMOLED
7.3-inch QXGA+ Dynamic AMOLED
OS Android 9.0 with Samsung One UI
Camera Back:

  • 16-megapixel (ultra-wide-angle)
  • 12-megapixel (wide-angle)
  • 12-megapixel (telephoto)

Front:

  • 2 x 10-megapixel
  • 8-megapixel RGB depth
CPU Octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 855
Storage space 512GB (not expandable)
RAM 12GB
Battery 4380 mAh
Fingerprint sensor Yes (right side of the phone)
Other features Wireless charging, fast charging

Those specs are really, really impressive (12GB RAM, Snapdragon 855), but to handle a foldable screen, that’s totally understandable.

Thanks to its 7.3 display and the optimized Samsung One UI, the screen can seamlessly handle 3 apps running at the same time (in the live demo, YouTube, Chrome, and WhatsApp were running) and it seemed really comfortable.

At $1980, this phone is not for everyone, and honestly, it’s not meant to be. But some people who want to possess a pioneer device will find what they are looking for. Actually, this phone is a huge step in the direction of rollable phones. Other constructors like Apple, Huawei or Motorola are working on foldable phones. This is the next step in the mobile phone industry, that certainly will revive this slowing sector. Also, devs will have a great tool to make sure their apps work well with a foldable screen or take advantage of the six cameras.

Galaxy S10, S10+, S10E, S10 5G: pushing the limits

When Samsung wants to celebrate the 10 years anniversary of the S family, they put everything into it.

According to the model you choose, you can expect :

  • up to 1TB storage space (!!)
  • the world’s first ultrasonic fingerprint sensor meant to work in all conditions and hidden behind the screen
  • up to 4 rear cameras (with one for 3D depth)
  • a battery up to 4500 mAh
  • 5G compatibility

The displays support HDR10+, and all models are capable of shooting 4K HDR10 super steady videos. The 3D depth-sensing camera will be great for new AR applications and photo tricks. But don’t expect to use it to unlock your phone (you can face unlock the phone, but not with a 3D secure technology). The price starts at $750 for the “lite” version – the S10E ($1000 for the S10+). We have noticed the intriguing Wireless PowerShare function, that might be useful in some cases, but in our opinion, it’s more like a gadget.

Note that the 5G feature will for sure help develop the video and game streaming sectors, thanks to the very high speeds this network technology will be able to achieve.

The design of the phone is really beautiful. The edge-to-edge screen looks awesome and the front cameras are well integrated into it to reduce drastically the discomfort.

The $1000 threshold is becoming the norm for new devices at the cutting edge of technology. Even if the specs are quite impressive, one could wonder if it is worth the price. It will highly depend on the use you make of it. To be honest, maybe it will worth to wait a few years that this amount of power and features become more mainstream, and more importantly, that apps capable of really taking advantage of them appear. But the power of those phones will simplify your life for sure, and we like the way the sector is evolving. Samsung will really influence other constructors with this kind of phones (even if some characteristics are inspired by others too…).

Parting words

Those two phones embed impressive pieces of technologies and a lot of engineering was needed to achieve such devices. Samsung clearly wants to influence the market and keep its leading place. We are excited to follow those technologies evolve in the future and participate to define the next mobile standards. If you want to make great photos and videos with your phone, such phones are totally capable of it. You want a versatile and powerful device, you need to boost your productivity if your smartphone is your work tool, such phones are made for that. Without reinventing the wheel, Samsung always pushes the limits, and try to make some of its technologies the standards of tomorrow, make our use of a smartphone easier and less frustrating than ever. We look forward to these technologies to become more accessible.
