Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled: Everything we know at the moment

Dear lovers of fast and thrilling races, you’re at the right place! Our beloved bandicoot is coming back in June with his kart, and we’re happy to announce that, as huge fans of the original game (and the whole franchise), we will cover the game from now on, and also after its release, as it has a big potential for DLCs and longer life cycle!

This first article will sum up everything we know at the moment, in anticipation of the release and future revelations before the release. Let’s jump right into it!

“Crash is back in the driver’s seat”

For those who don’t know what Crash Team Racing (CTR) is, or never played it, it is the fourth and last Crash Bandicoot game made by Naughty Dogs (original devs), released in 1999 on PlayStation, and the first racing game of the series. It is one of the most beloved games of the franchise and real success of jumping from a platform game style to a racing game style while staying true to the soul of the universe. More info here.

Officially announced during The Game Awards 2018, with the exciting trailer you can watch below, the remake of CTR has been teased long before! Several influencers (Youtubers particularly) received a few days before the announcement a pair of furry dices, which faces were pointing at the date of The Game Awards (December 6). At that point, the hype for us and every Crash fan was at its peak. But, Activision and Vicarious Vision might have also given us willingly some clues in the N’Sane Trilogy. Two trophies particularly are named after two quotes of an original CTR teaser trailer: “Buckle Up, Boys, Buckle Up!” and “Boo-yah, Grandma! Boo-yah!” (sorry for the quality, but the trailer can be watched here – non-official). So when the N’Sane Trilogy was released, a lot of people were thinking that CTR would be remade if the success was here… And gosh it was (more than 10 million copies sold after almost two years)!

The remake (or remaster, nobody seems to be able to definitely state on the correct term to use, but with all the new content and features, we can talk about a remake), Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled, will be released on June 21st, 2019 (20th anniversary), on PlayStation, Xbox and Switch. The game promises to be at least as awesome as the original, and really gorgeous thanks to the power of current technologies. Beenox (the studio from Quebec City, Canada, behind the game remake) does a really great job to deliver the best and most beautiful experience. The trailer will give you the perfect taste of the tone of the game: fast, fun and beautiful!

Content, content everywhere!

Of course, CTR Nitro-Fueled will offer all the original CTR content (characters, tracks, modes) remade from the ground up and in HD. But there is a lot more! It will be like two games in one.

As seen in the trailer, Beenox added an online mode. Known to be one of the best kart games along with Mario Kart, and particularly one of the most competitive and skill demanding kart games, this mode promises to offer a really good competitive experience and might be a way for Activision to make this game a long-term running one: maybe sort of a Rocket League, with regular new content and an emphasis on competition.

Also, all the content from Crash Nitro Kart (CNK, the second racing game of the series) will be in the game. So all the tracks, the karts, the characters, and the battle modes. The tracks will be adapted to the CTR style: in CNK, some tracks had anti-gravity portions. As this feature did not exist in CTR, those portions have been remade to fit the gameplay. Here is an example, with the track Out of time, where the track runs vertically on the clock in CNK, inside the clock in CTR-NF:

A lot of skins will be available, some exclusive (retro ones) to the PS4, kart customization, and also stickers. And the Nitros Oxide Edition ($59.99 instead of the regular $39.99 edition), will be loaded with that kind of content. The characters of the Nitros Oxide edition will be unlockable in the regular edition. The skins, however, will be exclusive to the Nitros Oxide Edition (pre-order), but maybe they will be available in a DLC.

This game will surely be a huge and enjoyable one!

More content?!

Well, after all of this what more could be done? There is a third racing game in the series, Crash Tag Team Racing. What if, maybe, some content of this game will be added to CTR-NF? Like tracks, characters (Nina Cortex for example) and gameplay (merging two karts). It is not impossible, as Thomas Wilson, co-director at Beenox, let the door open for more content in the future in some interviews. With the Nitros Oxide Edition, with CNK content added, the path is clearly traced to make this game propitious to DLCs. And on the road to the release, we can expect more surprises to be announced (yeah, Spyro, we look at you, you were a playable character in the handled version of CNK, and your tweets don’t fool anyone 😉 ).
